“Rural Hospital, Urban-Quality Care” Dr. Chelsey Topping on Women’s Health in Canmore

Women's healthcare is about far more than treating illness. It's about supporting women through some of life's most significant moments, from welcoming a new baby into the world to navigating complex health challenges later in life.

Recognizing the growing needs of women across the Bow Valley, the Canmore Hospital Foundation has made advancing women's health one of its key priorities. Through investments in new equipment, improved facilities and expanded surgical capabilities, the Foundation is helping ensure more women can access exceptional care without leaving their community.

For Dr. Chelsey Topping, one of Canmore General Hospital's OB/GYN specialists, those investments are making a difference every single day.

"When the room feels safe and comfortable, it empowers women in a very vulnerable moment," she says.

That philosophy is reflected in the hospital's upgraded labour and delivery rooms, where thoughtful improvements create a more comfortable and supportive environment for mothers and their families. Features like adjustable birthing beds and improved spaces for partners help transform what can be an overwhelming experience into one where patients feel cared for, respected and supported.

But the impact of donor support extends well beyond childbirth.

New minimally invasive surgical equipment, including a laparoscopic tower and hysteroscope, has significantly expanded the hospital's ability to provide gynecological care locally. Women requiring procedures for endometriosis, ovarian cysts, hysterectomies, fibroids and abnormal bleeding no longer face the same delays that are common in larger urban centres.

"In the city, patients can wait over two years to see a gynecologist," Dr. Topping explains. "Here, we're seeing them in six to nine months."

For women living with chronic pelvic pain or other gynecological conditions, that difference can be life-changing.

"Timely access to care has a huge impact on quality of life," she says. "Patients aren't living in chronic pain while they wait. They're getting answers sooner."

Earlier diagnosis doesn't just reduce pain. It allows women to return to work, spend time with their families, and move forward with confidence, while in some cases enabling earlier detection and treatment of serious conditions.

The Foundation's investments are also helping strengthen healthcare across the Bow Valley by attracting new specialists and expanding the hospital's surgical program.

"We're attracting surgeons to Canmore because of the facilities and equipment," says Dr. Topping. "We're a rural hospital, but we're delivering urban-quality care."

For patients, that means more services, more expertise and more opportunities to receive advanced care without travelling far from home.

Perhaps most importantly, it means receiving that care in a place that feels personal.

"We're able to provide care that feels personal, from check-in to discharge," Dr. Topping says. "Being able to give birth and have loved ones cared for in the same hospital creates a real sense of place."

That sense of place is something the Canmore Hospital Foundation is committed to protecting. As the Bow Valley continues to grow, so too does the need for exceptional women's healthcare. Thanks to the generosity of donors, more women are receiving faster diagnoses, shorter wait times and compassionate, high-quality care close to home.

Because when a community invests in women's health, it invests in the health of families, generations and the future of the Bow Valley itself.
